Art at Elson
The Art curriculum at Elson allows the children to have opportunities for self-expression, harbour an engagement and excitement for the skills acquired and be inspired by artists from around the world. It is a subject that is accessible to all and boosts confidence by allowing self-reflection and learning from mistakes, teaching the children critical thinking.
The curriculum aims to develop creativity by progressively developing a range of artistic skills. In addition, content, vocabulary and concepts are returned to often to secure an understanding, as well as allow the children to make links with prior learning and other subjects.
The DfE Purpose of Study for Art and Design states the following:
“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”
